Dramatic Relief from Panic and Anxiety
"Trina" had been suffering from severe bouts of
anxiety and panic for many years. The frequency of her suffering had
increased to the point where she was never without an underlying feeling
of anxiety and was having full blown panic attacks several times a week.
She had been to therapy before and understood what she was experiencing
and why, but had not found relief. She was reluctant to take medications
because of the side effects and the possibility of dependence on them.
With traditional talk therapy approaches, finding relief from this kind of
anxiety would be a long term process, and an emotionally difficult one at
that, re-visiting painful experiences perhaps over and over again. TFTTM
was particularly helpful for Trina. In only five sessions Trina was free
of all symptoms. In the first session we were able to reduce her overall
feelings of anxiety to nearly nothing. In the remaining sessions we
targeted specific fears and phobias, and successfully eliminated them. To
this date (several months later) she has not had any recurrence of her old
anxiety and panic!

Long-Standing Phobia Eliminated in One Session
"Brian" had a fear of cats. It made no logical sense
to him, but he had been suffering with it as long as he could remember. He
hadn’t had any traumatic incidents with cats. He didn’t have any other
particular fears. Just cats. Whenever he came near them he had an awful
queasy feeling in his stomach and fear overwhelmed him. He had tried to
talk himself out of the fear - affirmations, positive thinking - but to no
avail. He had tried to “face his fear”, but that had made no difference.
He thought he just had to live with it. In one short session his fear of
cats was gone! It has not come back even once. That was over a year ago.

Opening the Door to Communication in a Relationship
"Jeffrey" was in counseling to improve his marriage.
He was having a difficult time “dealing with conflict” with his partner.
He noticed that whenever the conversation got the least bit heated, he
felt jumpy and anxious and wanted to retreat. The mere thought of someone
being angry with him made him anxious. As we talked more about it, he
realized how afraid of conflict he really was and how seriously it was
affecting his relationship. He had become more withdrawn from his partner
over the years and found many creative ways to avoid conflict, including
workaholism, isolation, reading, and more. We used TFTTM
techniques to eliminate his fear of other people’s anger. It was very
successful. After the session he found that he was able to stay in
emotional conversations with his wife: to listen and talk without anxiety.
This opened the door to major positive changes in their relationship.

Quitting Smoking
"Julie" wanted to quit. She had tried several times
before, but each time the battle to fight off her strong addictive urges
was too much for her and she went back to cigarettes. I told her I could
teach her a simple technique that would eliminate her need for a smoke
whenever she felt the urge coming on. She was skeptical, but excited at
the prospect and willing to try it. First I asked her to rate her desire
for a cigarette at the moment. It was very strong. We used the EFTTM
techniques and in a matter of moments her desire had dropped to nothing.
In fact she said that the thought of having a cigarette right then made
her sick to her stomach! I checked in with her several days later and she
said that cigarettes still sounded awful to her! She is well on her way to
being a non-smoker. (This technique can be used for any kind of addictive
urge. It is very effective in eliminating the immediate need for an
addictive substance, and makes it much easier to get completely over the
addiction.)

Stranger Is Freed of His Fear of Heights
Just outside Palm Springs, California, there is a
Tramway that carries tourists nearly 6,000 vertical feet to the top of one
of the surrounding mountains. At the top is a lookout building with a deck
and railing that affords a sweeping view of the desert below, nearly
looking straight down. A woman, standing at the railing looking over the
edge, was exclaiming what a beautiful view it was. Her husband, however,
was not enjoying it. He was plastered with his back against the building,
visibly shaking, tense, with labored breathing. I moved up next to him and
quietly asked him if he was feeling afraid. He said, yes, that he had had
a fear of heights all his life and it was all he could do to be where he
was. I asked if he would like me to help him be free of his fear of
heights. “Of course”, he said. After a quick, simple treatment he had
calmed down completely, and was comfortably leaning over the edge of the
railing enjoying the view. Both he and his wife were totally amazed and
kept repeating over and over, “I can’t believe it! I can’t believe it."

911
Stress Recovery
Last week a client was referred who works the 911
emergency line. He recently took a call about a very young girl who had
been severely beaten. His equipment malfunctioned and he sent the rescue
team to the wrong address. It took them 8 minutes more to get to the right
address. She was unconscious and remained so for a week until she died.
The client was so concerned that, even though his
equipment was at fault, and even though the Critical Stress Incident
Debriefing assured him the delay would have made no difference in the
outcome of the little girl, he developed acute stress disorder. Upon
investigation there were other factors that were connected: the death of
his infant son three years ago and also some significant family-of-origin
material. It took two easy sessions, using only EFT to get him back on the
right track and back to work.
